What Is EMDR?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It’s a therapy that helps you process and heal from distressing experiences—especially those that may still affect how you feel, think, or react today. EMDR doesn’t erase memories, but it helps take the emotional pain out of them so they no longer control your life.
It’s a powerful, research-backed method often used for trauma, PTSD, anxiety, low self-esteem, and more.
How Does EMDR Work?
When something overwhelming happens, your brain sometimes can’t process it like it does everyday events. Instead, the memory gets “stuck”—and you might relive it through flashbacks, anxiety, or negative beliefs about yourself.
EMDR helps your brain reprocess those memories in a safe, guided way. Using gentle bilateral stimulation (usually eye movements, tapping, or sounds), your therapist helps you move through the memory, so your brain can file it away properly—just like it does with ordinary experiences.
The result? You feel lighter, more in control, and less triggered by things that used to overwhelm you.
What to Expect in an EMDR Session
If you’re curious about EMDR but a little nervous—that’s totally okay. Here’s what a typical experience might look like:
Getting to Know You
First, we’ll talk about your current challenges, your history, and your goals. This isn’t just about the trauma—it’s about you as a whole person.
Building Safety and Trust
EMDR doesn’t start until you feel ready. We’ll work on calming strategies and emotional tools together, so you feel safe and grounded before we dive in.
The Reprocessing Phase
When you’re ready, we’ll identify a memory or experience to work on. As you think about the memory, your therapist will guide you through a series of gentle left-right stimulations—like moving your eyes back and forth, hearing alternating tones, or tapping on your hands.
You just notice what comes up. There’s no pressure to “do it right”—your brain knows what to do, and your therapist is right there with you.
After Each Session
You might feel tired, relieved, or thoughtful after EMDR. Many people begin to feel noticeable shifts after just a few sessions. We’ll always check in and adjust the pace to match your needs.
You Don’t Have to Carry This Alone
Healing doesn’t mean forgetting. It means finally being free to move forward—without the past weighing you down.
EMDR is gentle, powerful, and you don’t have to relive your trauma in detail for it to work. You’re always in control, and we move at your pace.
